Nyt saadaan vihdoin kehiin ensimmäinen postaus meidän Abu Dhabin reissulta! Arabiemiraatteihin matkustaessa aavikkosafari on aktiviteeteista varmasti klassisin, ja myös me päätettiin varata yhden illan retki autiomaahan. Kuskin lisäksi meidän jeeppiin osui neljän irlantilaisen seurue, joista kaksi sattui työskentelemään maassa opettajina. Irkuilta kuultiin mielenkiintoisia näkemyksiä siitä, millaista Arabiemiraateissa oikeasti on asua ja tehdä töitä.
I’m glad I finally get to share this first Abu Dhabi post with you! Visiting the Arab Emirates, one of the most classic activities is to head out for a desert safari, so us too decided to book a trip out of the city for one evening. In the jeep, there were us, our driver and a group of four Irish out of whom two happened to work in the country as teachers. The Irish guy offered us some interesting insight into how it is to live and work in the Arab nation.

Saapuessamme autiomaahan päästiin todistamaan, kun pieni kamelinpoikanen nousi haparoiden omille jaloilleen ensimmäistä kertaa. Kameliperhe oli (tai ainakin vaikutti) luonnonvaraiselta, sillä yhtään kamelitilaa ei ollut näkyvillä mailla halmeilla. Poikanen onnistui sulattamaan ainakin mun sydämen tällä bambi on ice -hetkellään! Etukäteen en oikein osannut odottaa kovin autenttisia luontoelämyksiä meidän retkeltä, joten tämä oli ehdottomasti positiivinen ylläri.
Arriving in the desert, we got to witness a baby camel standing up on its own four feet for the first time. As the calf nor the mother didn’t wear any ID tags and there were no camel farms in sight, it at least seemed like this small family was living in the wild. I’m sure you can imagine how seeing the little guy’s Bambi on ice moment made my heart melt! To be honest with you, I didn’t know to expect authentic experiences like this of our day trip, so this really was a positive surprise for me.

Silti aavikkoretken parasta antia oli auringonlasku, joka pienen hetken ajan maalasi silmänkantamattomiin ulottuvat hiekkadyynit kullan ja oranssin sävyillä. Hiukan harmillista oli, että meidän edessä ajanut jeeppi jumittui hiekkaan juuri kuvien kannalta kriittisimmällä hetkellä. Onneksi nelivetoiset maasturit selvisivät tilanteesta nopeasti, ja me ehdittiin taltioimaan nämä auringon viimeisimmät säteet muistikortille.
Yet according to me, the best thing about our desert expedition was the sunset that for a short moment painted these endless dunes in orange and gold. It was however a bit disappointing that right during this peak moment a jeep driving in front of us got stuck in sand. Luckily the four-wheel drive survived the situation rather quickly, and we didn’t miss out on capturing this pretty light on our memory card.
Vaikka itse sanonkin, mun asu osoittautui nappivalinnaksi tälle minireissulle. Vaatteet olivat sopivan löysät autossa istumiseen samalla, kun vaalea materiaali pysyi viileänä Arabian auringosta huolimatta. Olkapäitä peittämään ja myös lämmittämään olin varannut Acnen villahuivin, ja ai että siihen oli mukava kääriytyä auton ilmastoinnin viilentämällä paluumatkalla. Tässä oli siis hiukan ensitunnelmia meidän reissulta – lisää seuraa pian!
My outfit choice turned out to be a success! The trousers were comfortable enough for road-tripping while the light material kept me cool even under the Arab sun. I had reserved the scarf to keep me warm in the evening and to also cover up my shoulders as needed. The shawl was seriously the loveliest thing during our drive back in the strongly air-conditioned SUV. So, here you had the first glimpses of our vacation – and there’s plenty more to come!
