1. Invest in a hotel with a nice pool
Vaikka Marbellassa toki rantaviivaa löytyy, fakta on, ettei hiekkarannat ole kovinkaan kauniita tai viihtyisiä. Jos todella haluat nauttia auringosta tai koet rusketuksen työstämisen tärkeäksi, kannattaa kivaa allasaluetta painottaa hotellia valitessa. Me päädyttiin yöpymään Marbella Club -hotellissa, joka on ollut myös julkkisten suosiossa aina Cristiano Ronaldosta Brigitte Bardot’hon. Vaikka hotellin suosio toki heijastuu hintalappuun, oli kokemus kuitenkin helposti hintansa väärti.
Even though Marbella has a long coastline, the fact is the beaches aren’t that beautiful or nice to spend time on. If you wish to enjoy the sun and really want to work on that tan, I recommend choosing a hotel with an emphasis on a lovely pool area. We stayed at Marbella Club hotel which has also been a favourite of many celebrities from Cristiano Ronaldo to Brigitte Bardot. The popularity can of course be seen on the price tag, but I feel the experience was well worth the splurge.
2. Marbella is a lot more than Puerto Banús
Puerto Banúksen alueen glamour kannattaa ehdottomasti nähdä ja kokea kerran, mutta meille yksi iltakävely satamassa riitti. Puerto Banúksen parasta antia on ehdottomasti liikkeet, mutta muuten entisaikojen hohto tuntuu jonkin verran rapisseen, ja alue on muuttunut aikamoiseksi turistirysäksi. Marbella on paljon muutakin, eikä Casco Antiguota (Vanhaa kaupunkia) tai Plaza de los Naranjosta (Appelsiiniaukiota) kannata missata.
The glitz and glamour of Puerto Banús port is very well worth seeing, but for us one evening stroll was enough. In my opinion, the best aspect of Puerto Banús are the boutiques, but other than that the glory of old times seems to have changed a bit with the arrival of tourist packs. But Marbella is a lot more than its glamorous harbor, and I suggest not missing out on Casco Antiguo (the Old Town) nor Plaza de los Naranjos (the Orange Square).
3. Here’s a list of our favourite cafés & restaurants
Oltiin tehty perusteellinen taustatyö ruokapaikkojen suhteen, eikä meidän reissulle sattunut yhtään huonoa tai keskivertoakaan ravintolakokemusta. Aamupalaa tai lounasta varten meillä oli kaksi suosikkia ylitse muiden – Celicioso ja Fresh Food Café. Dinneriä silmällä pitäen voin lämpimästi suositella Monkey Clubia, joka sijaitsee sattumalta ihan Celicioson naapurissa. Jos taas haluat take out -ruokaa, niin kannattaa ehdottomasti suunnata Delishiin.
When it comes to eating out in Marbella, we had googled around a lot and didn’t honestly have a single bad nor average restaurant experience. For breakfast and lunch, I ended up having two favourites above others – Celicioso and Fresh Food Café. For dinner, I recommend booking a table at Monkey Club which actually happens to be situated right beside Celicioso. In case you’re craving take out, then head for Delish (you wont regret it!).
4. To get around easily, I suggest renting a car
Koska auton vuokraus on Espanjassa edullista, päätettiin napata vuokra-auto jo heti yöllä saavuttuamme Málagan kentälle. Oltiin viimeksi Marbellassa 2015, ja tällöin nähtiin ja koettiin Andalusiaa kyllä paljon suppeammin. Välimatkat kaupungissa on isoja, ja väitän meidän tällöin hiukan jumiutuneen hotellille, koska ei taas viitsisi ottaa taksia (kävellenhän lähialueet tuli koluttua nopeasti). Nyt auto toi reissulle korvaamattoman määrän vapautta!
Because renting a car is fairly inexpensive in Spain, we decided to lease out one already after arriving at Málaga airport in the middle of the night. The last time we were in Marbella was in 2015, and then we didn’t see Andalusia nearly as much as we did now. The distances are pretty long, and I think we then ended up staying more at the hotel as we didn’t want to grab a taxi several times a day. This time around, the car gave us a huge amount of freedom
5. Go up on the mountains to enjoy the scenery
Niin kuin tässä postauksessa kerroin, me tehtiin yhtenä reissupäivänä roadtrip Pohjoisen vuorille, ja se kannatti! Maisemat ylhäällä on henkeäsalpaavan upeita ja pienissä vuoristokylissä on myös oma viehätyksensä. Huomioi kuitenkin, että vaikka alhaalla Marbellassa elohopea hipoisi hellelukemia, on vuorilla huomattavasti viileämpää. Mulla oli aamulla Rondan kylään saapuessa päällä farkut, paksu villaneule ja lisäksi vielä ohut takki.
Like I told you in this post, one day we did a roadtrip up North, and it was well worth the travel! The landscapes were breathtaking and the little white villages of the mountains absolutely charming. There’s one thing to keep in mind, though. Even if the temperature might be high down in Marbella, it’s a lot colder up there. Arriving in Ronda, I was wearing long jeans and a warm cardigan and still had to throw on a light jacket.
