Tässä vielä lisää kuvia äitini synttäriviikonlopulta, jolloin seurueemme yöpyi Ahlströmin tilalla sijaitsevassa, mitä kauneimmassa talossa Noormarkussa. Majoitustilamme sisustus oli toteutettu suomalaista designia kunnioittaen, ja niin kuin Ahlströmin plantaasien muissakin rakennuksissa, Aino ja Alvar Aallon kädenjäki oli nähtävissä kaikkialla. Kuuluisa arkkitehtipariskunta Aalto olikin suomen varakkaisimpiin teollisuussukuihin kuuluneen Ahlströmin perheen läheisimpiä ystäviä.
Here’s a few more snapshots taken at my mother’s birthday celebration, that’s when we stayed the night at family Ahlström’s plantation in Noormarkku. For those of you who aren’t familiar with the name Ahlström, it’s actually one of the richest industrial families in Finland. The interiors of our accomodation were realized with such high respect for Finnish architecture and design, and the hand of Aino and Alvar Aalto was seen practically everywhere. The renowned architect couple were indeed one of the closest friends of Ahlström family.
Lauantaisen kahvihetken jälkeen lähdimme tutustumaan Villa Maireaan, jonka Alvar Aalto suunnitteli ystävilleen Maire ja Harry Gullichsenille heidän Suomen edustusasunnokseen. Maire oli Ahlstömin rikkaan perheen tytär, joka avioitui sittemmin Ahlström Oy:n pääjohtajana toimineen Harry Gullichsenin kanssa. Pariskunnan vauraudesta kertoo jotain se, että suvun omaisuus oli tuolloin 30-luvulla suhteutettuna yhtä suuri kuin kännykkäjätti Nokia oli parhaimpina päivinään.
On Saturday, right after our afternoon tea, we headed to Villa Mairea which was drawn by Alvar Aalto for his dear friends Maire and Harry Gullichsen as their executive residence. Maire was the granddaughter of the wealthy Antti Ahlström who founded the family business. As a young lady, Maire married Harry Gullichsen, who later became the CEO of the industrial enterprise. It might tell you something about the riches of the family, if I told that the fortune of the couple was then what the cellphone-manufacturer Nokia was during its best days.
Villa Mairean sisustus oli upea, ja tällaista maailmaa kameran linssin kautta kokevaa harmitti suunnattomasti, kun opas kertoi Ahlströmin perheen asettaneen sisätiloihin kamerakiellon (tämä oli toki täysin ymmärrettävää, toimiihan Villa Mairea edelleen suvun yksityiskotina). Maire Gullichsen oli aikanaan intohimoinen modernin taiteen lähettiläs, ja Villa Maireasta jäi erityisesti mieleen Pablo Picasson ja Henri Matissen lukuisat, toinen toistaan arvokkaammat maalaukset.
The interiors of the Villa Mairea were fabulous, and for a camerawoman like me, it was quite a devastation to find out that no cameras were allowed inside the house (this was of course totally understandable as the family still spends quite many holidays there). Maire Gullichsen was in her time a very passionate ambassador of modern art, to say the least. One of the things I was most struck about was the amount of valuable Picasso and Henri Matisse originals that were found hanging on the walls.
Musiikkihuoneessa katse kiinnittyi nahasta ja lentokoneen pleksilasista valmistettuun flyygeliin, joita on oppaan mukaan aikojen saatossa valmistettu vain muutama. Soitin on siis varsin harvinaislaatuinen, komeileehan yksi tällainen muun muassa New Yorkin modernin taiteen museo MoMA:ssa. Kaiken huippu oli kuitenkin ruokailutilaan saapuessamme huomiomme kiinnittänyt valtava messinkinen kouru. Esineen käyttötarkoitusta tiedustellessamme opas selvensi kyseessä olevan Fazerin suvun Gullichsenin perheelle lahjoittama karamellinkiillotin.
In the music room, our eyes were drawn to the grand piano that we learned was built out of airplane plexiglass and leather. According to our sweet and professional guide, only a couple of those pianos were made and, in addition to Villa Mairea, you can find one gracing the halls of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. As we were approaching the dining hall, we wondered what was the massive bowl made out of brass that was situated in the corridor. We then found out that the bowl was given by the also wealthy Fazer family to serve the purpose of a caramel polisher.
Suosittelen Villa Mairean vierailua kaikille suomalaisesta designista kiinnostuneille. Talosta löytyy taiteenharrastajalle vaikka mitä, eivätkä sisätiloja koristaneet Artekin kalusteetkaan kalpene lukuisien Picassojen rinnalla. Nykyään Villa Maireaan voi tutustua vain erillisestä tilauksesta, mutta kokemus on varmasti hintansa väärti. Mikäli siis eksyt Porin suunnalle, muista tämä mäntymetsän uumenissa sijaitseva suomalaisen arkkitehtuurin helmi!
As a conclusion, I highly recommend visiting Villa Mairea for those of you who are interested in Finnish design. There is everything you can ever think of in the house, and, as for the simple and beautiful pieces of Artek furniture, they really don’t fade even beside all those Picasso originals. These days the only way to get inside the grand house is by booking one of their guides for your entourage, but it sure is worth every penny. So, if you for some reason find yourself on the West Coast of Finland, be sure to remember this architectural gem hidden in the pinewood forest!
